Why teams pick OHLC over Finnhub

  • You are a business. Finnhub's terms say its listed plans cannot be used by a business, even internally, without written approval. OHLC's Pro plan covers internal business use at $149 a month, and Commercial adds display and redistribution at a published $899.
  • You want prices and company data on one bill. Finnhub sells market data, fundamentals, estimates and ETF data as separate plans, with fundamentals priced per market. OHLC includes daily bars, financial statements, dividends, splits, earnings and SEC filings on every plan.
  • You want to test historical bars before paying. Finnhub's /stock/candle needs a paid plan. OHLC's Free plan returns 5 years of daily bars for its seven tickers.
  • You want raw and adjusted daily bars. Finnhub's daily candles are split-adjusted only. OHLC returns as-traded prices by default, with adjustment=split or adjustment=total_return on the same endpoint.
  • Backtests that survive ticker changes. Every listing has a stable instrument_id, and as_of and symbol_at answer what was known, and which company held a ticker, on any past date. Renamed, merged and reused symbols stop silently corrupting your history.
  • Data that is checked before you see it. Prices and corporate actions are compared across licensed sources before they are published, and disagreements are reviewed, not averaged away.

When Finnhub is the better pick

Choose Finnhub for real-time U.S. trades and quotes, decades of 1-minute or tick history, exchanges beyond the seven OHLC covers, or alternative data such as social sentiment, patents and lobbying. OHLC is built for U.S. equities, plus Canada, the UK, France, the Netherlands and Australia on Pro and above, with delayed quotes.

Switching from Finnhub to OHLC

The main changes are dates, symbols and the response shape: Finnhub takes Unix timestamps and returns parallel arrays, while OHLC takes calendar dates and returns one object per row.

  • Daily bars. /stock/candle?symbol=AAPL&resolution=D&from=<unix>&to=<unix> maps to /v1/eod?symbols=XNAS:AAPL&from=YYYY-MM-DD&to=YYYY-MM-DD (daily bars), with up to 100 symbols per request.
  • Adjustment. Finnhub's daily candles are split-adjusted. Add adjustment=split to match, or adjustment=total_return to include dividends.
  • Response shape. Instead of c, h, l, o, t and v arrays with an s status, rows arrive in data with named fields (date, open, high, low, close, volume) as exact decimal strings. An empty range returns an empty data array, not no_data.
  • Intraday. resolution=5 and 60 map to /v1/intraday with interval=5m or 1h (intraday bars), for about the last 30 days on Pro and above.
  • Quotes. /quote?symbol=AAPL maps to /v1/quotes?symbols=XNAS:AAPL (quotes), which takes several symbols at once and is delayed at least 15 minutes. /v1/snapshot adds the change from the previous close.
  • Auth. Replace token= or the X-Finnhub-Token header with Authorization: Bearer $OHLC_API_KEY. See authentication.
  • Pagination. OHLC returns at most 500 rows per page. Pass meta.next_cursor back as cursor until it is null. See pagination.

Fundamentals move to financial statements and financial metrics, and filings to /v1/filings. Create a free key to test the request shapes first.
