Dividend history,
from ex-date to pay date.

GET /v1/dividends returns cash and stock dividends with ex, record, declaration and pay dates, the amount per share, payment frequency, a split-adjusted amount and the cumulative factor used for total-return prices. Dividend yield, payout ratio and growth streaks come from /v1/financials/metrics.

Every key date

Ex-date, record date, pay date and the declaration date when the source supplies it.

Split-adjusted amounts

split_adjusted_amount restates old payments on today's share basis, so a 30-year series compares like with like.

Cadence and type

Frequency label, payments per year, and whether a payment is recurring, special or irregular.

Calculated metrics

Trailing and forward yield, payout ratio, five-year growth and payment and increase streaks.

What each dividend record contains

A dividend is a corporate action with one or more legs. A regular cash dividend has one leg carrying cash_amount and currency_code; a stock dividend carries a share ratio instead. Amounts are exact decimal strings.

FieldMeaning
action_typecash_dividend or stock_dividend
ex_dateFirst trading date the buyer no longer receives the payment; from and to filter on it
record_date, pay_date, declaration_dateAs the source reports them, null when not supplied
frequency, frequency_per_yearThe source's cadence label as supplied (null when it sends none) and the payments per year (4 for quarterly, 12 for monthly, 0 for a special), from the label or, without one, from a second source's cadence for the same dividend
distribution_typerecurring, special, irregular or unknown
split_adjusted_amountThe cash amount restated for later splits
historical_adjustment_factorCumulative dividend factor that adjustment=total_return applies to earlier prices
is_cancelledtrue when a declared dividend was withdrawn

Split-adjusted dividend history

Old dividends are reported as paid. If a company later splits 4-for-1, a $0.82 payment from before the split is $0.205 on today's share basis, and split_adjusted_amount gives you that number directly. Use it for growth rates and charts; use the raw cash_amount in the leg for what shareholders actually received. Johnson & Johnson's history in our data starts with an ex-date of 1970-02-16, where the raw amount and the split-adjusted amount differ by more than a hundredfold.

Questions, answered.

Is there a free dividend API?

Yes, for testing. The Free plan returns dividend history and metrics for AAPL, NVDA, JNJ, PEP, MSFT, SPY and QQQ with 5 years of history. Developer ($49/month) covers every U.S. stock and ETF, and Pro adds Canada, the UK, France, the Netherlands and Australia.

How far back does dividend history go?

As far as the listing's recorded history, bounded by your plan. Johnson & Johnson's dividends in our data start in 1970. Free and Developer can query 5 years back, Pro 15 years and Commercial and Scale everything.

Does the API include ETF dividends?

Yes. ETFs are U.S. listings like stocks, so /v1/dividends?symbols=ARCX:SPY returns their distributions on Developer and higher plans; Free covers SPY and QQQ.

How do I get dividend-adjusted prices?

Request daily bars with adjustment=total_return. Each dividend's historical_adjustment_factor is the factor that mode applies to earlier prices.

How are special dividends marked?

distribution_type is special and frequency_per_year is 0 when the source labels a payment as special, or, for a payment it leaves unlabelled, when a second source classifies the same dividend as special. One-off payments outside the regular schedule are irregular.
