Why teams pick OHLC over Massive

  • You will show data inside a product. OHLC's Commercial plan includes display and redistribution for $899 a month. Massive's individual plans do not allow showing data to anyone else, including testers and colleagues, so a customer-facing app there starts at $2,499.
  • More than one person needs the data. OHLC's Pro plan allows internal business use at $149 a month. On Massive, sharing data with a colleague moves you to Business.
  • You need company data alongside prices. Financial statements, dividends, splits, earnings and SEC filings are on every OHLC plan, including Free. On Massive, financials come with Advanced or as an add-on.
  • Backtests that survive ticker changes. Every listing has a stable instrument_id, and as_of and symbol_at answer what was known, and which company held a ticker, on any past date. Renamed, merged and reused symbols stop silently corrupting your history.
  • You want a hard ceiling. Credits reset at 00:00 UTC, the cap returns 429, and there are no overage charges.

When Massive is the better pick

Choose Massive for real-time feeds, tick-level trades and quotes, second and minute bars with long history, real-time options, or futures. It is a market-microstructure specialist; OHLC is built for delayed U.S. equity prices with the company data around them.

Switching from Massive to OHLC

Both APIs accept a bearer token, so auth changes only in the key and host. The differences are symbols, default adjustment and the response shape.

  • Symbols. AAPL becomes XNAS:AAPL, SPY becomes ARCX:SPY. Bare tickers also resolve, but the qualified form is unambiguous. See symbols.
  • Auth. Use Authorization: Bearer $OHLC_API_KEY against https://api.ohlc.io/v1.
  • Daily bars. /v2/aggs/ticker/AAPL/range/1/day/{from}/{to} maps to /v1/eod?symbols=XNAS:AAPL&from=…&to=… (daily bars), with up to 100 symbols per request.
  • Adjustment. Massive aggregates are split-adjusted by default. OHLC returns raw prices by default, so add adjustment=split to match, or adjustment=total_return to include cash dividends.
  • Whole-market days. Massive's Daily Market Summary maps to /v1/eod?date=YYYY-MM-DD with no symbols, which costs 500 credits.
  • Intraday. Minute aggregates map to /v1/intraday (intraday bars) with interval=5m or 1h (Pro and above, about 30 days).
  • Pagination. Instead of following next_url, pass meta.next_cursor back as cursor with the other parameters unchanged. Cursors expire after an hour. See pagination.
  • Response shape. Rows arrive in data with named fields (date, open, high, low, close, volume) as exact decimal strings, and meta carries next_cursor and as_of.

If you used Massive flat files, OHLC's nightly flat files start on Pro, and Scale can push them to S3. Create a free key to test the request shapes first.

Questions, answered.

Which plan do I need to show prices in my app?

On OHLC, Commercial ($899/mo) or Scale. On Massive, a Business subscription ($2,499/mo); its individual plans cover one person's own use only.

Can my team share one Massive individual plan?

Massive describes its individual plans as covering one person's own use, so sharing data with colleagues or testers needs Business. OHLC's Pro plan covers internal business use at $149 a month.

Is Massive the same company as Polygon.io?

Massive is the current name of the service formerly known as Polygon.io. This page compares OHLC with Massive's plans as published on massive.com.

Does OHLC offer real-time stock prices like Massive?

No. OHLC quotes are delayed at least 15 minutes, which covers most dashboards, research tools and backtests. Massive lists real-time data on its Stocks Advanced and Business plans.

Does OHLC have tick-level trades or options data?

Partly. Pro and above include U.S. options contracts, bars and quotes, and /v1/trades returns a U.S. listing's consolidated-tape prints back to 2008, one day at a time from the day after each session. For real-time trades and quotes, Massive is the better choice.

Can I connect OHLC to Claude?

Yes. OHLC's remote MCP server at https://api.ohlc.io/mcp supports OAuth sign-in on Developer and above. See OHLC for Claude.
